Tozeur

The oasis of Tozeur is situated on the west bank of the Chott El Jerid. It is fed by about 200 streams and the best dates in Tunisia, the “Deglet Ennour” (fingers of light), are produced in its palm groves. The center of Tozeur is extremely picturesque with the houses built in symmetrical, ochre-colored brickwork with simple yet exotic decorations. Tozeur was originally a Numidian city and later the city may also had been Roman (a military outpost of Tusuros on the Babes-Biscra road).

In the summer, mirages are not an illusion during the crossing of the Jerid! This is an intense experience not to be missed. There is also the “Paradise”, a beautiful rose garden, and the desert zoo which houses scorpions, serpents and vipers. Also, an unforgettable panoramic view from the highest point in the city over the palm groves, the Chott and in the distance the infinite horizon of the Sahara.
