Bizerta (Hippo Diarrhytus)
Due to its strategic location in the northern Mediterranean coast of Tunisia, Bizerta is considered as an important commercial and military city. It is also known as the Bridge-city since it is reached through a moving bridge over a canal. The city features an attractively Phoenician old port and the Spanish fort, which is dated from the 16th century, was build by the Turkish to protect the city from the continuous Spanish threats. In addition, Bizerta was a major naval bases during the French protectorate. It was the last city to be evacuated from French troops.
Main activity: handicraft and underwater fishing.

Other places to visit: the fish market, the Corniche, la Kasbah, the Great Mosque, Cap Blanc, and Cap Angela. We also do recommend you to visit the following two sites in the suburb of Bizerta:
Utica:
A Punic city, founded in 1101 B.C by a group of settlers from Tyre (287 years before Carthage). It was a major trading post in the Mediterranean. The site museum exhibit many Punic features and objects, such as statues, amphora, jewels, vases, etc.,. Toward the hills you find the remaining of a Roman town, depicting a Roman theatre, paved streets, an aqueduct, and ramparts.
Lake Ichkeul:
One of UNESCO’s world heritages. It is considered as a favorite winter-home for nearly 200 species of birds and some wild animals, and contains more than 500 kinds of plants. Visitors to the park enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding mountain.
